While in college, it is often tempting to forgo the daily or weekly exercise routine that you might do at your local gym. It can be hard to balance your studies, social life, job, and working out too, but exercise should be made a priority. Staying in shape while in college doesn’t have to take a backseat to your education. Let’s explore 7 simple ways to help you exercise as a college student.

1. Do Yoga
Set your alarm to get up 20 minutes before you intend to start your day. All you need is a bath or beach towel to lay down on your apartment or dorm room floor. You can also invest in a travel mat that won’t take up much space in your dorm. 20 minutes of yoga poses and stretches is a terrific way to start your day with gentle exercise. You can also do yoga as a way to de-stress during exams or other busy times.
2. Use the Fitness Center
Many colleges offer fitness centers for your convenience. These tend to be very busy early mornings or in the evenings. If you want some quiet gym time, go as soon as you finish your day in the late afternoon when the fitness center is generally not crowded. Unwind while doing strength training or using the elliptical. Take a sauna, if they have one. Then, shower and get ready for a nice relaxing dinner knowing that you have expended some extra calories. If your college doesn’t have a fitness center, consider joining a local gym.
3. Walk Around Campus
Walking around campus is not just a way to get from one class to another but also offers a good deal of exercise. You would be amazed at how many steps you can take when you are with other people and enjoying the scenery around you. The time will fly and you will learn so much while getting a workout.
4. Swim
If your college or apartment has a pool, take a swim. Swimming is one of the most aerobic exercises that targets and tones all your muscles while also being very relaxing. The water offers little resistance and isn’t likely to cause an injury.
5. Go for a Run
As a college student, look up the neighborhood where you are staying to determine if it is safe for running and what the good routes are. Or, find a nearby park with jogging paths. Pack your sneakers and lightweight running clothes. A 30 to 60-minute run is all you need to stay in your workout routine zone. The fresh air will be invigorating.
6. Museum Hop
You can’t visit a museum without having to wander the halls while enjoying the exhibits and works of art. Spend an entire day enjoying museums, galleries, and other places of interest in your college town or a short drive away. Take a much-deserved break for lunch. This is a fun day that includes a light workout. A shopping spree works well too or even just a few extra laps around the grocery store.
7. Download an App
There is no excuse for not staying in shape while away at college when you can upload exercise apps onto your laptop or phone. If you are alone in your room, access the workout app and follow the routine for as long as you feel comfortable. It’s like bringing a personal trainer with you.
